How long will a portable power station run a refrigerator?

Short answer: a 1 kWh power station runs a modern full‑size fridge for roughly 14 to 16 hours, and a 2 kWh unit for well over a day. Here is how to work it out for your own fridge, with real numbers for every station we review.

How much power does a fridge actually use?

A fridge does not run constantly. Its compressor switches on and off throughout the day, so what matters is the average. An average Energy Star refrigerator uses about 493 kWh a year, or roughly 1.35 kWh a day. That works out to an average draw of about 56 W.

While the compressor is running it pulls more, around 168 W, and for a split second at start‑up it needs several times that. Any station on this page handles that start‑up surge. Older or larger fridges, side‑by‑sides and models with ice makers can use two to three times more energy.

Runtime for every station we review

Estimated with a 56 W average draw and 85% inverter efficiency. Real results depend on room temperature, how full the fridge is and how often you open it.

How to make it last longer

Keep the door closed: a full fridge holds its temperature for about four hours with no power at all, so you can even switch the station off for a while overnight. Turn the thermostat up a notch, unplug the ice maker and move frozen bottles of water into the fridge to act as ice packs.

If you have solar panels, a station with high solar input can refill during the day what the fridge uses at night. Around 300 W of panels in good sun covers a typical fridge’s daily 1.35 kWh.

Frequently asked questions

Will a power station damage my fridge?

No. All the stations we review produce a pure sine wave, the same type of power as a wall outlet, which is safe for compressors.

Can a 500 Wh station run a fridge?

Yes, for about 7 to 8 hours if it delivers at least 500 W and handles the start‑up surge. The Jackery Explorer 500 v2 is a good example. For a full night, 1 kWh is safer.

Does a mini fridge use less?

Usually yes, often 25–40 W on average, but small fridges are not always efficient. Check the yellow EnergyGuide label for its yearly kWh and divide by 8,760 to get average watts.
